하루를 얘기하는 간단한 대화입니다.
대화를 통해 “sleep over”와 “sleep in”의 차이,
자동사와 타동사의 차이 그리고 강조를 표현하는
"as ~~ as"을 살펴보겠습니다.
Sarah: John, tell me about your day.
존 당신의 하루를 얘기해 주세요.
What time do you wake-up?
몃시에 일어나세요?
John: Well, let's see.
응, 그러니까
Some days I wake up early. Maybe about 6 o'clock.
어떤날은 일찍 일어납니다. 아마 6시쯤요.
Yeah, sometimes I wake up at 6 o'clock.
네, 어떤때는 6시에 일어납니다.
When I get up early, I like to get ready for the day,
take a shower and have breakfast.
일찍 일어 날때는 그날 하루를 위해 준비합니다.
샤워하고 아침먹고 합니다.
But other days,I don't like getting up early.
하지만 다른날은 일찍 일어나는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다.
Maybe I'll sleep in until 10:00 or 11:00
10시나 11시까지 늦잠을 잡니다.
늦잠을 잔다는 표현으로 “sleep over”와 “sleep in”이 있습니다.
한국분들은 대부분 아무 구분없이 “sleep over”를 사용하십니다.
하지만 두개에는 차이가 있습니다.
“sleep over” (일어나야 할 시간에 일어나지 못한 경우)
I slept over this morning and was late for school.
오늘 아침 늦잠을 자서 학교에 늦었다.
The couple slept over at the hotel. So they missed the tour bus.
그 부부는 호텔에서 늦잠을 잤습니다. 그래서 투어버스를 놓쳤습니다.
“sleep in” (마음놓고 늦게까지 푹 자는 경우)
I finished my project today, I like to sleep in tomorrow morning.
오늘 프로젝트를 마쳤어, 내일아침은 푹 늦잠자고 싶어.
Every Sunday, I always sleep in regardless what my wife says.
월요일에는 아내가 뭐라고 하든 늦잠을 잡니다.

John: Yeah. I like sleeping in late.

So sometimes, I wake up at 11:00.
그래서 가끔 11시에 일어납니다.
On those days, if I know I won't wake up until 11:00,
그런날은, 만일 내가 11시까지 일어나지 않을 것이라는 것을 알면
I'll take a shower the night before, before I go to bed.

So I wake up everyday at 8 o'clock.

Sarah: 8:00. And I always do the same thing.

First, I make coffee right away.

영어에는 자동사라는 것과 타동사라는 것이 있습니다.
자동사는 "주어가 스스로 하는 동작"을 말하고 타동사는 "주어가 다른 사람이나 물건에 행하는 동작"을 말합니다. 한국어에는 이 구분이 중요하지 않습니다. 하지만 영어에서는 중요합니다. 같은 단어가 두가지로 쓰이는 경우가 있고 단어가 다른 경우가 있습니다. 동사 wake는 두가지로 쓰입니다. I wake up early. 어떤날은 일찍 일어납니다. (자동사) I wake up my kids. 아이들을 깨웁니다.(타동사) |

Sarah: Yes. We usually have something easy
like bread and yogurt and fruit.
네, 우리는 항상 빵이나 요구르트, 과일같은
간단한 것을 먹습니다.
John: I like to have coffee every morning whether
I wake up at 6:00 or at 10:00. I'm still going to have coffee.
나는 매일 커피마시는 것을 좋아합니다.

But I often skip breakfast.
하지만 아침은 가끔 생략합니다.

그럼에도 불구하고, ``에도 상관없이"라는 의미로 쓰이는 still을 기억해 두십시오,

John: Lunch is the same everyday for me.

So whenever I wake up, I do some things and then
I always have lunch at 12:30 PM, just half past noon.
언제 일어나든, 일을 좀하고
항상 12시반에 점심 먹습니다. 정오를 30분 넘겨서요.
And I always have a simple lunch.
그리고 항상 간단한 점심을 먹습니다.
Maybe some soup or spaghetti or a sandwich.
수프 조금하고 스파게티 그리고 샌드위치요.
Something light, and it's always at half past noon.
가벼운 것들이요, 그리고 그건 항상 정오를 30분 지나서입니다.
What time do you eat lunch?
몇시에 점심드세요?
Sarah: That's interesting.

I have breakfast at the same time everyday
but lunch is always at a different time.
나는 아침은 매일 같은 시간에 먹지만
점심은 항상 다른시간입니다.
John: Really?

Sarah: Because I'm busy in the morning.

I go out, maybe I go shopping. Sometimes, I clean the house.

So I might have lunch at 11 o'clock or 12 o'clock.
